Mr. Kevin John Callen, of Harwich Port, passed away after a valiant battle with COVID-19 on February 12, 2021. Kevin fought the beast of a virus with all he could. He was the ultimate family man. There was no order too tall and no drive too far when it came to his family. He never missed a beat and would go to the ends of the earth to make his loved ones happy. He always did so quietly, showing devotion and affection through his actions.
Kevin, the youngest of three siblings, was raised in Milton, Massachusetts by Paul and Marion Callen. He loved his two sisters dearly and held a special place in their hearts as the “baby” of their family. As he transitioned into adulthood, he was fiercely loyal to his mother and did everything possible to make her proud. In 1976, he graduated from Boston College and was forever proud of his alma mater (Go Eagles!). It was during these years that he also found his true love for cars, something that stayed with him throughout his life. Back in the 1970s, he could be found cruising about town in his Corvette or MG, disco music playing in the background!
In the early 1980s, he met his wife and best friend, Susie. Only two months into dating, he decided she was a keeper and proposed. Susie agreed that they were destined to live happily ever after…and they were on their way! They started a family and raised their two children in Hingham, Massachusetts. Kevin was a devoted employee of the telephone company for 35 years, but above all, he was there for his family. He never missed a family dinner, game, or recital. You name it and he was always on time.
Kevin and Susie relocated to Harwich Port in 2017 to pursue a quiet and peaceful life by the beach. It was here that he found happiness in the many joys that come along with life on Cape Cod. He could often be found walking along Red River Beach, taking in the salty air, with his wife and best (furry) friend, Paisley. He also relished in his children’s visits, strolling the streets of Chatham or simply taking “real estate tours,” where they would drive up and down streets that line the shore and point out beautiful houses. Of course, there was always a stop for coffee along the way! On the Cape is where he found absolute joy.
Those who were lucky enough to know Kevin know that he was the most kind and gentle soul. The faithfulness of his tribe speaks volumes about who he was as a person. Although he was taken from us far too soon, we are far richer for the precious time we had with him. His legacy will surely live on through a pleasant walk by the beach, an afternoon with The Beach Boys, or a sunny cruise up and down the coast of Cape Cod. He will be missed more than we can even express.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan. His daughter, Kristina Karassik and her husband Chris of Boston. His son, Paul Callen and his fiancée Nell of Boston. His beloved furry friend, Paisley. His sisters, Nancy Wifholm and Paula Hobart of Boynton Beach, FL. His nieces and nephews, Kristen Kerl, Galen Wifholm Jr., and Dawn Wight all of Boynton Beach, FL. He was also on the cusp of becoming a grandfather in May. His memory will certainly be cherished and shared with the next generation by keeping stories close on-hand.
Services will be held privately at McDonald Keohane Funeral Home in South Weymouth with a celebratory Memorial Service to come later. See www.keohane.com for online condolences.
Donations can be made to The Cape Cod Foundation or American Heart Association.
Normally, the funeral is an opportunity for the community to gather in support of one another. Although we cannot gather together with Kevin’s family at this time, friends may still offer their support by sharing a special memory or message by clicking the link above.
