Kenneth R. Kelly of Prospect Harbor, ME, formerly of Hingham, MA, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. He was 92.
He was born on Nov. 4, 1931, in Boston, MA to Robert F. Kelly and Jane J. Kelly (MacDougall). Ken graduated from Boston English High School and Boston College. He served in the U.S. Army Security Agency, stationed in Hokkaido, Japan. Following his military service, Ken received his MA degree in Classical Languages from Boston College in 1960. He taught Latin and other subjects in the Boston Public Schools and Palmer High School where he also coached football and ice hockey. Ken married Barbara Leggitt of Three Rivers, MA in 1962. They relocated to Hingham, MA where they raised three children: Robert (Isabelle) of Hingham; Kathleen (late Brian) Hooper of Milton, MA; Eileen (Peter) Pray of Groton, MA. Grandfather to Elyse, Ryan, Tyler, Alexandra, Lydia and Juliette and great-grandfather to Avery and Oliver.
Ken taught Latin and English at Hull H.S. from 1963-1994 and served as an Assistant football coach and Head Ice Hockey coach from 1968-1976. In 1984 he was inducted into the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame for his achievements coaching hockey at Palmer H.S., Weymouth H.S. and Hull H.S. from 1961-1976. Ken served on the Board of Directors and as financial officer of the M.S.H.C.A. from 1968-2002. Ken was a long-time member of the Mass. Teachers Association, the Classical Association of New England (CANE) and Small Woodlot Owners of Maine (SWOAM). Ken had a lifelong love of Gilbert and Sullivan Light Operas, Ancient History and Boston College hockey. He enjoyed playing ice hockey with adult groups from 1963-2009. Upon retirement, Ken and Barbara relocated to Prospect Harbor, Maine where they soon met many people who became close friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visitation on Thursday, December 7th, from 9-10 AM in the Church of the Resurrection, 1057 Main St., HINGHAM. A Funeral Mass will be held immediately following the visitation at 10 AM. Burial in Hingham Cemetery, Hingham.
