Kathleen “Katy” (Desmond) Hayden of Hingham, formerly of Dorchester, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family, February 16, 2016.
Beloved wife of 50 years to Robert E. Hayden (Ret. Boston Police Department and former Chief of Police of the City of Brockton) of Hingham. Loving mother of Eileen Murphy and her husband Richard of Hanover, Robert Hayden, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Duxbury, Kathy Smith and her husband Greg of Duxbury and Kevin Hayden and his wife Jennifer of Canton. Cherished and devoted grandmother of Kailey, Hannah, Jacqueline, Ryan, Victoria, Hayden, Alex, Thomas and Lydia. Dear sister of Daniel Desmond of Weymouth, Mary McGrail of Mansfield, Eileen Desmond of Dorchester, Anne Quinn of Weymouth, Margaret Clifford of San Antonio, TX, Denis Desmond of Boston and the late Patrick, Robert and Sr. Joan Desmond (Sister St. Patrick), SND.
Katy’s passion was ice skating and family. Katy was the Founder, Owner and Director of Winterland Skating School for 40 years and the Hockey Jump Start program for 13 years.
Katy has received numerous national awards for ice skating from the Ice Skating Institute (ISI), including: ISI Woman of the Year, Great Skate Award, Erica Amundsen Award, and the Presidents Award for Excellence. Additionally, Katy was inducted into the Bay State Games Hall of Fame in 2013 on the field of Fenway Park in front of a capacity crowd. Katy was a Perpetual Committee Chair, ISI Board Representative, Seminar Leader, Speaker and Event Organizer Extraordinaire. Katy has inspired literally thousands of children and taught them not only how to skate, but how to face life with confidence and courage.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-6 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Funeral service will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 AM in McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main St. (Rt. 18 opp. South Shore Hospital), Weymouth. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Katy’s memory to Cops for Kids with Cancer, 14 Michele Lane, Braintree, MA 02184.
