Kathleen C. Smith

Kathleen Cullen Smith (Carey) of Weymouth passed away peacefully on October 1, 2018 surrounded by her loving family following a lengthy and courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer.

She was born in 1948 in Quincy to the late Thomas and Helena Carey. She grew up in Hingham, graduated from Hingham High School and attended Cape Cod Community College.  She was the wife of the late Marshall A. Smith and the mother of Aaron M. Smith, married to Lori Smith, and Christopher S. Smith. The family lived in Hingham where she devoted herself to raising her children and was actively involved in all of their activities, most notably youth and high school hockey. Resurrection Parish was a significant part of her life. She was a communicant and active parishioner since its founding in 1957 and worked in the rectory as a housekeeper for over thirty years. A quiet homebody, she began to travel following the death of her husband twenty-five years ago. She started with trips to visit her sister’s family in Western Mass. Before long, she was taking road trips with friends and family to Nashville Tennessee, Florida, and Maine as well as cruises to Bermuda. She had many friends with whom she enjoyed her interests: concerts, bingo, church bazaars, county fairs, fishing, and travel. She had an active mind and loved challenging it with games and puzzles. She was an ageless playmate to all children who knew her, and had a love for animals that made her the favorite of the family’s pets. At sewing weekends with her sisters, she made cat beds to donate to shelters, cough pillows for hospital patients, and heating pads for people in treatment for cancer. She was fiercely protective of her family and friends, and generous with her time and empathy. Her sense of humor never faltered through a long and difficult illness. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, aunt, sister, and friend.

She is survived by four siblings: Thomas Carey and his wife Ann of Hingham; Joan Proffit Connolly and her husband Gerald of Weymouth; Marcia Walsh and her husband Jack of Marshfield;  Marilyn Carey and her husband James Drisko of Northampton; as well as her brother-in-law Gary Smith of Harwichport. She is also survived by three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, Cullen and Carey cousins, and many dear friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday from 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.) HINGHAM. Family and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9AM on Friday prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in the Church of the Resurrection, 1057 Main St., Hingham. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
