Joyce W. (Grady) Nolan

Joyce Warrene Nolan, 57, died peacefully at home on January 10, 2016 after a valiant fight against cancer. “Joycie” was surrounded by her  family and friends, and was welcomed into heaven by parents, Catherine and Warren Grady, and her sister, Susan Grady.

Joyce was a Valentine’s Day baby, born on February 14, 1958 in Milton, MA. She grew up on Oak Street in South Weymouth and graduated from Weymouth South High School and Quincy College School of Nursing.  Joyce married the great love of her life, George Nolan, when she was 23 years old on April 17, 1982. They have been best friends for more than 40 years.

The theme of Joyce’s life since the moment of her birth was love. She had an enviable passion and love for everyone she knew and everything she did. As her calling to care for others grew, she enrolled in a licensed practical nursing program at Quincy College, eventually continuing her education and graduating as a registered nurse.

Nursing allowed Joyce to touch numerous lives of both her patients and their families at Massachusetts Respiratory Hospital, Fresenius Dialysis, Hospice of Boston, and Old Colony Hospice. She was known for her zest for life and great sense of humor, which was contagious to everyone that was lucky enough to know her.

Besides sharing her compassion and grace with those  most in need, Joycie was also known for some of her other favorite things: beach getaways on Martha’s Vineyard with requisite clam chowder on the ferry, vacations at the end of tax season with her husband, George, camping with friends in the Berkshires, Scrabble, cheering for the Patriots, bird watching and gardening in her backyard, and performing the greatest hits of Tina Turner, Carly Simon, and the score from the Sound of Music in her living room, to entertain and delight family and friends.

Joycie leaves behind many who will miss her terribly. Her husband, George Nolan of Hingham, her sisters, Joan Grady of Boston and Nancy Grady O’Connor of Shrewsbury, her brother, Warren Grady and his wife Mary Rose of Mashpee, her mother in law, Kay Nolan of Weymouth, and the late Joseph R. Nolan, sister in law of,  Robert Nolan of Boston, Joseph Nolan of Weymouth, David Nolan and his wife Claire of Weymouth, John Nolan of Kingston, Gregory Nolan of Weymouth, Mary Nolan Carnell and her husband Paul of Weymouth, and Caroline Nolan of Hingham, along with many  nieces, nephews, and cousins, including, Barbara Marks and Claire Niles.

Joyce’s family is grateful to the staff on 5A at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the staff at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Dr. J. Paul Marcoux, II. Her family also appreciates the loving care that Joyce received from her colleagues and friends that she had worked with throughout the years. Each of you are angels and Joyce will always be ours.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged in Joyce’s name to Old Colony Hospice, 1 Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA.
