Josephine Dorothea (Carbone) Cannata, age 86, a homemaker, and longtime resident of Hingham, died on Thursday, January 10 at Harbor House. Mrs. Cannata, who described herself as a “crafty utilizer” was a talented craftswoman who enjoyed working with yarn and fabrics. She took special delight in giving beautiful hand-crafted items as gifts to her family and friends. She was an active member of the Crafters’ Club at the Hersey House Senior Center for many years and a communicant of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She was an accomplished cook and enjoyed gardening. She was blessed with nearly 40 years of marriage to her beloved husband, Edward N. Cannata, Sr. who died in 1982. She was a kind and loving mother, sociable and outgoing who made her home and family her top priority. She was an excellent judge of character who offered her family invaluable advice on life and love. Mrs. Cannata was born in South Boston in 1915, the daughter of Josephine and Domenic Carbone who came to this country from Palermo, Sicily. She graduated from the Mather School and attended Dorchester High School for Girls. She worked for Hovey’s Department Store for ten years. She and her husband were married in Salina, Kansas during World War II. After the war they settled in Dorchester, then moved to Arlington, MA for 6 years and eventually to Hingham in 1964.Mrs. Cannata was the mother of 3 daughters and 3 sons: Pauline Platter of East Bridgewater, Margaret Lucas of Rockland, Edward Jr. of Pembroke, William of Hingham, Andrew of Boston, and Doris Syrakos of Lynn.She is also survived by a sister, Mary D’Alessandro of Centerville, 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren andseveral nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral from the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM Monday at 9:15 AM. Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10:00 AM. Visiting hours Sunday 6-9 PM. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham. Donations in memory of Mrs. Cannata may be made to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
