Joseph Robert Driscoll, 78, of Braintree died peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family on December 6, 2021. Joseph was born in Boston and raised in Dorchester and spent many happy times at Walsh Park. He graduated from Cathedral High School and Boston College, where he became a lifetime Eagles football, hockey and basketball fan and where met his beloved wife, Maureen (Sullivan) They settled in Braintree and they made it their home for 54 wonderful years.
Joe’s family was most important to him and he loved being involved with his children’s activities. He was a coach in youth hockey, softball and basketball and he never missed a school concert, play or recital and was always ready to help with homework or shoot some hoops in the driveway. This enthusiasm carried over to his grandchildren. Joe achieved success in business as an executive with Blue Cross Blue Shield, as CEO of Private Health Care Systems, and as CEO of Socios Mayores en Salud, a Medicare Advantage HMO in Puerto Rico. These companies profited from his leadership, however the most satisfying aspect for Joe was the professional development and growth of those who reported to him and the strong friendships he made.
An avid golfer, he enjoyed playing New Seabury Country Club with his son and his life-long friends from Dorchester. He enjoyed his summers in Popponesset, dinners at the Inn, fishing on the bridge at Dean’s Pond with his grandchildren, and walks on the beach with his wife, his best friend. The procurer of donuts and munchkins was a job he took most seriously and was consistent in ordering more than enough for his grandchildren during their visits to Cape Cod.
Joe and Maureen enjoyed traveling together to such places as Ireland, Italy, England, Scotland, China but most of all France to see his daughter and son-in-law and their three beautiful grandchildren. They also enjoyed spending their winters in Bonita Springs, Florida.
He was a devoted father and is survived by Colleen O’Leary and her husband Seán of Natick, Joseph Driscoll and his wife Lauren of Braintree and Christine Goulay and her husband Matthieu of Croissy sur Seine, France. Cherished grandpa to seven grandchildren: Daniel and David O’Leary of Natick, Joseph and Sean Driscoll of Braintree, Clementine, Gwendoline and Patrick Goulay of Croissy sur Seine, France. Loving brother of Anne McDonald, and the late John of Dedham and Mary Ellen Olsson and her husband Stanley of Norwood, and many nieces and nephews.
His life provides a durable memory and a lasting example of the power of a loving heart, a sound head, a charitable spirit, a desire to achieve and the determination to succeed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joseph’s visiting hours on Friday, December 10, 2021 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the McDonald Keohane funeral home, 809 Main St., Weymouth, MA. Burial will follow in High Street Cemetery, Hingham.
