Roper, Joseph M. of Bourne, 99, died February 22, 2016. Joseph grew up in Dorchester and moved to Weymouth in 1967. Joseph was a dedicated member of the Boston Fire Department and started his career in 1942 advancing to Superintendent of Maintenance retiring in 1977. Joseph’s first major fire involvement was the tragic Cocoanut Grove November 8, 1942. The fire department was a passionate role in his life with most of his colleagues being his brothers. Beloved husband of 62 years to the late Rita A (Connelly) Roper. Cherished father of Jean Coye and her husband Edmund of Bourne, Joseph Roper and his wife Ann of Bourne, Richard Roper and his wife Virginia of N. Falmouth. Brother of Mary Ryan and predeceased by William and George Roper. Grandfather of David, Kristen, Stephen, Juliann, Kevin, Joey and Todd. Great-Grandfather of Alison, Jordan, Taylor, Brandon, Olivia, Lucas, Griffin and Eviana. Known to most to have a brilliant mechanical mind and could repair anything. Joseph enjoyed boating, fishing and time spent with family. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours 9-10:30 AM on Friday in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Funeral Mass will follow at 11AM in Sacred Heart Church, Weymouth. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
