Joseph G. Sandahl Jr.

Sandahl, Joseph  G., Jr. of East Weymouth, went home to be with the Lord on January 7, 2019, after long illness.

Beloved husband of the late Margaret E. “Peg” Sandahl. Loving father of Jon E. Sandahl and his wife, Kristin, of Hanson, and Pamela Engstrom and her husband, Jonathan, of Halifax. Brother of Kenneth Sandahl and his wife, Carol, of Walpole. Grandfather of Jillian and Jack Sandahl, and Elizabeth Engstrom. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Joe was born on July 11, 1938 to Bertha and Joseph Sandahl Sr. and grew up in Walpole. When he was 17 he wanted to join the army national guard, but because he was under age, his mother had to sign a letter allowing him to join. He was honorably discharged in 1964 after 9 years of service. On December 12, 1957, Joe was initiated into the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 103, and was a proud member for 61 years. He retired in 1996 after sustaining a shoulder injury, but wanting to keep busy and be involved in his community, he began volunteering at South Shore Hospital, where he always had a smile and loved making the nurses laugh. In recent years with his declining health, whenever he had a stay at the hospital, he would enjoy the attention from the nurses who remembered him. Joe loved animals, whether it was feeding the birds and squirrels in his back yard, or giving too many treats to his daughters dogs and cats.

After marrying Peg in 1962, Joe became a member of the Wollaston Congregational Church, where he generously volunteered on many committees and was on the board of trustees. He also enjoyed being in charge of the County Store table with Peg and making wooden crafts for the church’s annual fair.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wollaston Congregational Church, 48 Winthrop Avenue, Quincy on Saturday January 26th, at 11 AM, followed by a reception in the church social hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wollaston Congregational Church or Hospice of the South Shore: www.southshorehealth.org/give (Donate, Gift designation “Hospice of the South Shore”)
