Jose Luis “Joe” Figueroa, age 69, a semi-retired restaurant owner, died suddenly on Tuesday at Quincy Medical Center. Jose was a 34 year resident of Quincy and Milton. Joe was born and raised in Utuado, Puerto Rico, a son of jibaro farmers. He then moved to Boston as a young man. He opened Joe’s Famous Sub Shop in Dudley Square, Roxbury, MA in 1971. Joe’s Sub Shop continues to be recognized as an institution amongst locals and visitors alike for serving world renowned shaved steak subs. Joe remained an integral part of daily operations at the restaurant and the surrounding community until his final days. Joe was a passionate Red Sox fan as well as an avid Mass lottery player. He was well-known for his generosity and compassion toward family, friends and his fellow man, treating all with dignity and respect. Mr. Figueroa is survived by his wife, Blanca, his son Jose Jr., his daughter Claudia Hernandez and ten siblings. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday in St. Ann’s Church, Wollaston at 10:00 AM. Visiting hours are Sunday 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA, Wollaston location. Mr. Figueroa suffered from chronic asthma.
