John W. O’Grady

John W. O’Grady of Hingham departed this world peacefully on November 24, 2023, at the age of 89. Born in Whitinsville to Phillip O’Grady and Katherine O’Grady (Healey), Devoted husband to the late Rose P. O’Grady. Beloved father to John O’Grady Jr. and his wife Pia of Brockton and Erin O’Grady of San Diego. Brother to Tom O’Grady and his wife Molly of Scituate, Ma. He will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

John graduated from Northbridge High School in 1952,. He then attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1957. His early career took him to Barksdale AFB, where he witnessed history unfold as the first squadron of Boeing B-52 Stratofortress Bombers touched down. He was then stationed in England at LakenHeath RAF where he was the 2nd American Airforce personnel arriving to assemble and install the Titan 3 Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles that President John F Kennedy ordered in response to Krushchev’s threats during the cold war. It was a moment that would mark his distinguished military service.

John met his wife of 57 years, Patricia, during his time in England, and their love story became an enduring testament to his commitment to family. He completed a masters in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, John’s educational journey was as illustrious as his military career.

Retiring as a Colonel from the US Air Force, John’s contributions were not limited to the military. From NASA to the FAA and later with MITRE Corporation, he continued to make an impact. His team’s creation and installation of a groundbreaking radar system for tracking planes taxiing on the runway, adopted globally, showcased his dedication to innovation. At MITRE, his team developed, tested and delivered a critical component of the Joint Tactical Information Distribution system (JTIDS), a communication architecture created to ensure valuable battlefield information was available to AWACS and fighter pilots.

John’s remarkable wit and sense of humor, paired with a keen intellect, made him a captivating storyteller, and he carried these qualities throughout his life. He loved sailing, travel, literature, and family, He will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial mass to honor John and Pat will take place on December 11th at 10:00 am at St. Paul’s Parish in Hingham. For directions and online condolences, please visit www.Keohane.com. Burial at the MA National Cemetery to be scheduled in the spring.

In bidding farewell to a man who brought joy and laughter into our lives, we remember John W. O’Grady for the twinkle in his eye and the enduring warmth of his spirit. May he rest in eternal peace.
