John W. Kane

John W. Kane, age 91, of Quincy and formerly of Stoneham, died peacefully on Monday, August 11, 2014, surrounded by his loving daughters.

John was born in South Boston and raised in Stoneham. He graduated from Malden Catholic, Class of 1940, and studied post-graduate at Hebron Academy, where he pursued his love of hockey. His studies at Harvard were interrupted by four years of service in the Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, he graduated from Harvard with the Class of 1946, working his way through school with jobs as a truck driver and construction worker. After marrying his grammar school classmate and love of his life, Anna Cassidy, he worked at Shawmut Bank, earned a law degree from Boston College Law School in 1956, and retired as president of the Shawmut Melrose Wakefield Bank. After retirement he taught business law at Boston College. A resident of Quincy for 58 years, he served on the board of directors of Quincy Hospital, as interim director of the Quincy Housing Authority, as a member of Sacred Heart Church and Interfaith Council, a coach for CYO hockey, a volunteer at Long Island Hospital and various literacy programs, and a supporter of Manet Community Health Center and many other organizations.  He also served on the board of directors of Melrose Hospital and was awarded Man of the Year for his work on the scholarship fund of the Boston Taxi Drivers Association. He was generous, intelligent, and had a great sense of humor. John loved the water and enjoyed swimming, walking and sailing along Wollaston Beach. What he cherished most, however, was his family.

Beloved and devoted husband to the late Anna M. (Cassidy) Kane. Loving father to Ellen Kane Kelly and her husband John Kelly of Boston, Anne Kane Cashman and her husband Tim Cashman of Wakefield, Rhode Island, and Susan Kane Driscoll and her husband William Driscoll of Medford. Cherished “Grampa” to Dylan, Michaela, and Hannah Cashman and Willa Driscoll. Loving Uncle John to many nieces and nephews. John’s family would especially like to thank all his caregivers for their kindness and compassionate care.
