John L Slocum (Jack), retired civil engineer, died peacefully in Hingham on January 31st. He was born in Syracuse, New York on July 11, 1927, the son of Joseph Leslie and Harriet Riley Slocum. He was a direct descendant of Giles Slocum who came to Portsmouth, RI from Old Cleeve, Somerset, England in 1638.
Jack and his late beloved wife Elizabeth Connaughton Slocum were married in St. Michaels Church in Providence in 1950. They were parents of five children – Elizabeth (Stephen Markesich) of Kingston, MA, Martha of South Weymouth, MA, John (Ann Quinton) of Concord, MA, Thomas (Judy Dudley) of Bellingham, WA, and Dean (Kerry Lynch) of Dartmouth, MA. They had 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Jack worked for thirty-five years at the architectural and engineering company Maguire Group, Inc., serving as structural engineer, project manager, office manager, president, and chairman of the board. He was a member of the University of Rhode Island Engineering Hall of Fame, a former director of the U.R.I Advisory Council and the Providence Chamber of Commerce and was a lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was a member of the Warwick Country Club for over 20 years and was formerly a consultant with the Executive Service Corps of New England.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Sunday 2/9/2025 from 2-4 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Monday 2/10/2025 prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 10 AM. Private inurnment to be held at St. Columba's Catholic Cemetery, Middletown RI.
In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Rhode Island Community Food Bank or to the John L. Slocum Civil Engineering Scholarship at the University of Rhode Island.
