John “Jack” Vincent Ryan Jr. of 15 Bel Air Rd. In Hingham passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on June 28, 2024. Born on May 6, 1939, in Quincy, Massachusetts, Jack was the beloved son of Helen McClain Ryan and John Vincent Ryan. He grew up in North Weymouth and proudly wore his hometown on his sleeve. Jack was a proud graduate of Weymouth High School and Newbury Junior College.

In 1956, Jack joined the Marine Reserves as a junior in high school, beginning a remarkable 30-year journey of service to his country. His time in the Marines and the Army took him through the Cold War in Germany, where he honed not only his military skills but also his eye for a good story. Returning home, it was during a stroll past John J. Lamb Insurance in Weymouth that he first spotted Joyce, the love of his life. They married, had two children, many grandchildren, and shared a life full of love, support, and a healthy dose of gentle ribbing.

After retiring from the Marine Corps, Jack's leadership journey continued as he was elected Commandant of the Marine Corps League. He proudly led over 70,000 Marines, both active duty and retired, and used his position to help Marines overseas return home. He was instrumental in the Toys for Tots program and worked tirelessly to support Marine families in need.

Jack’s professional life was as varied and dynamic as his service career. He worked at Braintree Light as a trouble man before launching his own business, Overhead Electric. After retiring from his business, he embarked on a new career in real estate, first with DeWolf and eventually with Coldwell Banker in Hingham.

Despite his many achievements, Jack's greatest pride was his family. Married to Joyce for over 55 years, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Jack was a man of stories—tales of the old neighborhood, his time in Germany, his kids, his grandkids, and the good old days. He cherished his time with his wife, his children, and especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

Jack enjoyed golf, reading, weekends away with the Marines, and most of all, his family. He'll be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jack Ryan, the coolest cat and the toughest teddy bear you'll ever meet, leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter. Loving father of Jeanne Ryan McPhail of Hingham, John M. Ryan and his wife Pamela of Derry NH and Monika Streber-Hofmann and her husband Luipold of Munich, Germany. Cherished brother of the late William Ryan and his wife Maeve of Middleborough and Mary Adams her husband the late Steve Adams of California. Devoted Grandfather of Michael Ryan McPhail, Kathryn McPhail, Molly McShane and her husband Michael, Lydia Ryan, Lacey Ryan, Emma Ryan, Benjamin Streber, and Christian Streber. Loving great Grandfather to Cooper McShane. He is also survived by his wife's family, many nieces and nephews and many friends.

To meet him was to love him. To know him was to witness a life well-lived. Semper Fi, Gunny!
