John Robert Crowley

John Robert (Bob) Crowley – a life-long resident of Hingham, MA and parishioner at St. Paul Parish – passed peacefully into eternal life on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.

Bob was born in Hingham on November 7, 1923 to John J. and Augusta (Magner) Crowley, and was the oldest of the three Crowley boys – Bob, Walter H. (d.1989) and J. Richard (d.1966). Bob attended Hingham High School (Class of 1941), where he played on both the varsity basketball and track teams. After Hingham High, Bob enrolled at Harvard University, only to be quickly called upon to leave Harvard and serve his country through the ‘90-Day Wonder’ officer training program at Columbia University. Bob became a naval officer and served on the USS Perkins in the Pacific during World War II. He and his shipmates on the Perkins accompanied the USS Missouri into Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945 for the signing of the treaty with Japan that ended World War II. After returning from the war, Bob enrolled in, and graduated magna cum laude from, the University of Notre Dame.

Bob’s professional career saw him undertake various management positions at Bell Atlantic in and around the New England and New York regions. He served on the Hingham Advisory Committee and was elected to the School Committee. After retirement, Bob served on the Board of Directors at the Hingham Institution for Savings and served a term as President of the Hingham-Hull Rotary Club. He was a member of the Cohasset Golf Club and the Hingham Yacht Club, for which he served as Commodore from 1982-1984.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Helen E. (Mahoney) Crowley, his four children – Peter M. Crowley of Princeton, NJ; Janice L. Crowley of Cohasset, MA; David J. Crowley of Fountain Valley, CA; and Paul G. Crowley of Lincoln University, PA. He was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-8 PM in the PYNE Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 AM on Saturday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10 AM. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.
