John P. Reilly

John P. Reilly, of Weymouth, passed away on August 8th, his 89th birthday.

John was born in Boston’s South End and lived there and in Dorchester before moving to East Weymouth in 1962. He attended Cathedral High School, Boston State, Suffolk University and the Harvard Trade Union Program. John was a true Unionist and served as President of the Boston Teachers Union before joining the Massachusetts Teachers Assn. as a labor representative for over thirty years. He served on the Executive Board of his union and was their Permanent Parliamentarian until the past decade. After moving to Weymouth John became active in local politics serving on numerous commissions and proudly as the last Town Moderator in town. John’s pride and passion for family was evidenced by his love and support of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John and Bethann met in Codman Square, Dorchester and dated for five years before getting married in 1959. They shared a love for travel and visited all fifty states, Ireland over a dozen times and numerous other countries. He never went anywhere without running into someone he knew, from the Blarney Castle to Yellowstone to Disney World and everywhere in between. As a former English teacher, John was a lover of books, having a tower of them by his chair always. His service to the community lasted up until this past year as a Rotarian and Chairman of the Conservation Commission in Weymouth. He reveled in his days as a Parliamentarian and knew Roberts Rules of Order like no one else. John thoroughly enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports and attended as many events as he possible. If you asked, he’d let you know; his grandchildren were the smartest, most athletic, and all-around best kids to ever be born.

Loving husband of 64 years to the late Elizabeth A Reilly of Weymouth who passed away in 2023. Beloved father of Annemarie Gable and her husband Eric of Weymouth, Michael Reilly and his wife Debbie of Braintree, the late Kevin Reilly and his wife Maureen of Weymouth, Maureen Connolly and her husband Doug of Weymouth, Patricia Rielly and Steve Malley of Hingham, Kathleen Ford and her husband John of Wrentham.
