John “Red” Sugrue, 95, a longtime Hingham resident, died January 7, 2024.
The beloved husband of 65 years to the late Rosemary “Poe” Sugrue. Loving father of Eileen Sugrue-McElearney and her husband Paul McElearney of Natick, John (predeceased), Christine Sugrue and her companion Phred Lender of Savannah, GA, Edward and his wife Susan of East Sandwich, Peter and his wife Lisa of Hull, Brian and his wife Heather of Milton and Christopher and his wife Lisa of Scituate. Brother of Jean Cahill of Brockton and predeceased by Betty Schmidt, Pat Leblanc and Arthur, Gerry, and Dennis Sugrue. Doting and proud Papa to Colin McElearney, Daniel Sugrue and his wife Sara, Nathan, Ava, Brady, Lyla, and Aidan Sugrue. He is survived by many deeply committed and frequent visiting nieces and nephews.
John was born and raised in Cambridge, MA. He worked for 40 years for General Motors in Framingham and Westwood and was a proud UAW member, evident by his awareness of all that transpired in the recent union negotiations. In retirement and keeping with his mantra to “learn/earn/return”, John volunteered for several years with the Hingham Council on Aging driving senior citizens on errands and activities. His favorite was the annual trip to Fenway Park. John was an avid Boston Sports fan, he read both papers sports sections daily and loved to correct you if you had the wrong information on the big four sports teams. His life was a very blessed and full one, most evident by the conversations and witty exchanges with his immediate and extended family, as well as special friends during their many calls and visits.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Tuesday, January 16th, from 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.) Hingham. A celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Wednesday, January 17th, prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10 AM. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.
