John R. Macaulay

MacAulay, John R. of Quincy, passed away at home November 2, 2009. Loving husband and best friend of the late Helen M. (Zero). Devoted and loving father to Kimberly A. MacAulay and loving grandfather to Nicole M. Elwell, both of Quincy. Father-in-law to be to Steven M. Lorenc of Andover, CT. Also the brother of the late Katherine Gear and William A. MacAulay. My dad was a WWII veteran of the Navy (Seabee). He was a tractor trailer driver for 25 years with Lee H. Long and Yale trucking. He loved to work. He played pro hockey with Gordy Howe in his days before the NHL. He worked for the Quincy Public Schools for 27 years. He also enjoyed going out to lunch with his three best friends, whom he called his cronies: Norman Schlegel, Robert Peters and Jerry O’Connell. They all worked together at North Quincy High School. My dad loved the hot weather. He liked it when the family would get together at a vacant lot at Nantasket Beach. We would be there early and go home late. He also loved to dance with my mom at Son’s of Italy functions when they were members. My mom would dance with her brother Al and my dad would dance with her sister Mary. He loved his sports: football, baseball, and most of all, hockey. His motto was “Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets”. His granddaughter Nicole was the apple of his eye. He was there for her birth and even named her. He loved watching TV with his two favorite girls. We had our nights of “Law and Order” and “CSI-Miami and NY”. My dad had a special bond with his brother-in-law Al. They were closer than brothers, always doing something together. He loved to swim in the pool we used to have. He played the “Lifeguard”. He had so much fun in the pool with Nicole. He used to say he was the “Boss” and what he said goes. He always had us laughing with his stories from the war to the family ties. My dad will be missed by so many friends and family, but he wants everyone to remember the good times he shared with all. He will be missed by his dog “HOBO”. He was his his dog. So if you like “Scotch and Water” have one for my dad with a cigarette or cigar. Nicole and I will remember all the fun times we have had all these years with my dad. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. Burial service will be private. Donations in memory of John may be made to American Cancer Society, Central NE Region, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or Season’s Hospice, 275 Grove St., Newton, MA.
