John R. Donlon

Donlon, John R. of Quincy formerly of Milton, passed away February 24, 2011at Marina Bay Nursing Facility, he was 99 years old Beloved husband of the late Marion (O’Connell), and Mary (Conlon). Brother of the late Rev. William, Charles, Edward, and Graham Donlon and Alice Molloy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. John was born and raised in Hyde Park. He was a graduate of Hyde Park High School. John was an Army veteran of WWII where he served in the 4th Division, 22nd Infantry Regiment. He took part in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach, in Normandy, France. Following the invasion the 4th Division, 22nd Infantry Regiment was one of the most active, and decisive divisions in the European theater of operation. He received several medals for his service, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a retiree of the City of Boston where he worked in the maintenance department of The Boston English High School. He was a member of the Cyril P. Morrissette American Legion Post #294 and the Quincy Historical Society. He was one of a small group of WWII veterans responsible for the design of the Quincy WWII Memorial in Merrymount Park. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-4pm in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Quincy at 10 AM. Burial in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline.
