John P. Mccarthy

McCarthy, John Patrick of Hingham, formerly of Braintree, Weymouth and Hanover, died peacefully on March 27, 2022, surrounded by his family.  He had just celebrated his 86th birthday with friends and family.  A Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict, John was honored to serve his country.  He was a talented engineer with Pollack Engineering, Sigma Instruments and Esselte.  Throughout his career, John published many inventions and patents.  After retirement, he continued to keep busy volunteering for The American Red Cross, The Prison Book Program and singing with the Braintree Choral Society.

John moved to Linden Ponds in Hingham and enjoyed dinners and activities with many friends.  He was an active member of the Genealogy, Irish, Ceramics, Painting and Veterans Clubs, as well as helping with advertising for the local theatre group.  He was an avid model ship builder and reader of historical novels.  He loved spending time with his family, and Thanksgiving in Vermont, was one of his favorite holidays.  Turkey being the side show, this holiday included, the annual puzzle throw down, flag football games, “Don’t forget the Gerard’s Gravy Challenge” and cutting down of Christmas trees.  Christmas, was not to be outmatched by Thanksgiving! At the Annual Mitch Miller Sing-a-Long, John was known to take his part in the Twelve Days of Christmas, to the utmost extreme!  A gifted storyteller, with a sarcastic wit, John made friends wherever he was.

John loved to trace his family roots back to County Cork, Ireland and was thrilled to be able to meet long-time family members during his two trips.  He was such a lover of Irish tradition that he built beautiful stone walls – rock by rock, that he dug out of the woods around his home in Hanover.  True to his proud Irish heritage, John was famous for his whistling of Irish songs aplenty!

Devoted father of Diane Jacobs (McCarthy) and her husband Larry Jacobs of Jericho, VT, Brenda Linden (McCarthy) and her husband Rob Linden of Weymouth, MA.  Cherished Grandpa of Emily Jacobs, Ryan Jacobs and his wife Nicole, and Robert McCarthy Linden “Robbie Mac.” Loving Brother of Sister Juana McCarthy, NDA and niece Kristin Shea. Predeceased by his wife Carolyn McCarthy (Driscoll) his parents Dorothy and John McCarthy and sisters; Kathleen Shea, Sister Mildred McCarthy, NDA, Joan McCarthy and Mary Johnson.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours of 10-11:30am in The McDonald Keohane Funeral Home (North Weymouth) on Wednesday, March 30, 2022. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated immediately following at St. Jerome’s Church in North Weymouth at 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, John would have loved any memorial tributes be made in the form of a donation to the amazing staff at The South Shore Hospital’s Critical Care Unit; South Shore Health Foundation, 55 Fogg Road, South Weymouth, MA 02190-2455, or online at SouthShoreHealth.org/Evergreen.
