Riegler, John Joseph, age 84, of Hingham, formerly of Rochelle Park, NJ, died Sunday, August 23. He was predeceased by his parents Marie and Joseph Riegler and his beloved wife, the artist, designer, and illustrator Margaret Anne “Sue” Riegler. He leaves behind his sister Marie Fee of Florida; son Robert, of NJ, and daughter Susan, of Quincy, and grandchildren Sara, Ryan John, and Brandon, as well as many dear friends and family. John possessed an incredible love of words and ideas and earned his bachelors degree from Seton Hall and Masters degree from Fordham University and additional graduate work at Rutgers University. As Quartermaster second class in the US Navy, John served in WWII on board the USS Pelias. He then earned a Marine intelligence certification for criminal investigation and served as a member of the Washington DC Military Police. Known by the nickname “Beetle Juice”, he received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. John then pursued a career in law enforcement that spanned over 47 years and included membership in the Jersey City Police force and the Bergen County Office of Probation. His last and most rewarding assignment was to assist families involved in complex child custody cases which highlighted his ability to seek positive solutions in crisis situations. John was a member of the US Naval Reserve, American Legion and an ardent volunteer for many charities including the American Red Cross, CHORE home repair assistance program for the elderly, and the Catholic Church’s overseas missions. He received the New Jersey Governor’s award for voluntary service in 2008. He enjoyed fishing and boating, drawing and wood working, and reading. An avid Boston Red Sox fan, he followed each and every game. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Tuesday from 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Wednesday prior to the Funeral Mass in Saint Ann’s Church, Quincy at 10 AM. Cremation to follow. The family expresses gratitude to South Shore Hospital and Linden Ponds for their assistance and positive spirit.
