John J. Barry of Quincy, formally of Weymouth, passed away with his loving family by his side on June 13, 2023. He was 91 years old.
Born in South Boston he was the son of the late Michael and Ruth Barry. After growing up in South Boston, John met the love of his life, Gayle. They lived lovingly and happily in Weymouth for 54 years.
John loved two things – his family and his country. John took great pride in serving his country in the United States Navy and being a Korean War veteran. He rarely left the house without one of his many Navy or Korean Veteran baseball caps. He also proudly served his community as a firefighter for the Town of Weymouth for many years where he was also the union president. Over the years, John enjoyed catching up with his fellow firefighters for breakfast and always looked forward to seeing them.
John was your typical Irishman from Southie – funny, stubborn, and quick tempered. This can be verified by his hockey playing sons and anyone affiliated with Weymouth Youth Hockey in the 80’s. He also had a great sense of humor and a knack of telling a good story. They typically were about his best friend Angelo, his children and life in “the neighborhood”. John had a big heart and everyone knew the Barry’s door was always open – whether you were a Barry or not.
John loved his wife, his kids and all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved family parties, cookouts, and Gayle’s family dinners she would prepare with love….as long as the mashed potatoes had no lumps. He loved road trips to see family in Upstate New York for summer vacations. He loved dressing sharp and a spritz of good cologne. Whether you knew him as Dad, John, Jipper, JB, Grampa, Papa or Umpa – you were lucky to know him. He was loved by so many and will be dearly missed by all.
Loving husband of Gayle Barry (Backlund) of Quincy. Cherished father of Cheryl Curran of NH; Loralyn “Lori” Barry of Weymouth, John “Jay” J Barry and his wife Christine of Weymouth, Kevin Barry and his wife Jessica of Weymouth, Brian Barry and his wife Kristi of E. Bridgewater, Michael Barry and his wife Cassandra of Kingston, David Barry and his wife Victoria of Halifax, the late Kathleen Gioiosa and her surviving husband Richard of NH. Devoted brother of Alice Combs of NY. Adored grandchildren Michael; Matthew, Evan, Shannon, Courtney, Joseph, Emma, Kate, Owen, Sarah, Brooke, Presliegh, Lucy, Ava, Jameson, Aurora, Chloe, Ruby, Mason and Landon. Beloved great-grandchildren Lincoln and Patrick. John will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Friday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 AM in McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main St. (Rt. 18 opp. South Shore Hospital) , Weymouth. Burial to follow in Fairmount Cemetery, Weymouth.
