John F. Nelson Jr.

Nelson, John F., Jr. long term resident of Weymouth, passed away January 7, 2019 after a long illness. He was 91.

He was born and raised in Dorchester, graduating from Boston English High School in 1944. He proudly enlisted in the Merchant Marines in support of WWII and returned to begin his career with Boston Edison. At the start of the Korean War, John signed on with the Coast Guard, returning again to Boston Edison after serving his country. He retired after over 40 years. John’s intelligence earned him many degrees and professional licenses, including a bachelors from UMass in political science/history, an associate degree from Massasoit Community College in mechanical engineering, a first class operating engineering license, a ham radio operating license and private pilot license. He enjoyed reading, gardening, sailing, baseball, hockey and was an avid Braves fan. In his early years he coached youth hockey and little league baseball. John was an active parishioner of St. Jerome Church. He will be missed and loved by his family and remembered as a character with many opinions and accomplishments. 

Son of the late John F. Nelson and Mary C. Nelson. Devoted father of Paula Nelson and her husband Dick Jensen, John F. Nelson III and his wife Caroline, Andrea Nelson and her companion Christopher Cope and the late Karen Tise. Cherished Grampie of John F. Nelson IV, Ashley Nelson, Troy Nelson and Madelyn Nelson. Loving brother of the late Virginia Iannella. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.  

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street (off Route 3A – Bicknell Square). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9:30 AM on Friday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Jerome Church, Weymouth at 10:30 AM. Burial in Old North Cemetery, Weymouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to Brigham and Womens Hospital, Development Office, 116 Huntington Ave, Boston MA 02116.
