Barry, John E., of Hingham, beloved husband of Marjorie A. “Marge” Barry, died peacefully November 4, 2007 in the house where he had lived for 84 years. He was also the dear father of Jane and her husband Davis Hartwell of Portland, Maine. Cherished grandfather of Thomas and Benjamin Hartwell. Devoted uncle of John Mahar of Marshfield and the Philippines. Mr. Barry was a lifelong resident of Hingham. He was born on November 3, 1921, and since 1923 has lived in the house built on Main Street by his parents. He graduated from Hingham High School in 1938 and from M.I.T in 1942. He was married for 57 years to his wife, whose maiden name was also Barry. John served in the U.S Army during WWII and retired as a Reserve Colonel. He served for over 55 years in volunteer or elected positions with the Town of Hingham, including the Board of Health (15 years) and the South Shore Country Club Development and Management Committees. He was a member of the Hingham Tennis Club since 1946. Although aged 86, John was tenacious at staying active. He died in his home after a day of gardening. He had large flower and vegetable gardens and even managed to dig up the dahlia tubers and bed the gardens before his passing. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., (off Central St.), HINGHAM, Monday at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in Saint Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10 AM. Visiting hours Sunday 2-6 PM. Burial in Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.
