John Douglas Smith

John Douglas Smith, age 77, of Hingham and Boynton Beach, FL, cherished husband of 39 years to Gail (Broydrick) Smith, died at his home from pancreatic cancer, surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 13, 2007. He was born and raised in Jamestown, TN, graduated from Alvin C. York High School in Jamestown, TN and attended Michigan State University. John served in the US Navy on the U.S.S. Rochester and the U.S. Coast Guard. He was employed in Commercial Sales with the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company in Detroit, MI. He also worked in Commercial Sales for the Cambridge Gas Company in Cambridge, MA. He retired in 1992 after many years as an investigator. He was a former member of the Hingham Lions Club. John was also the Herring Run Warden in Weymouth for many years and worked tirelessly to completely restore it to its original capacity. John was authentic, a man true to himself. His legacy will be that he was well loved by everyone who knew him. John is survived by 2 sons and 2 daughters, Nancy L. Smith and Robert Palmer of Boston and Palm Beach, FL, John G. Smith and Ann Smith, Douglas B. Smith, Barrie Smith and Karen Cavallo, all of Hingham. Adored grandfather of Lilianna Palmer, Benjamin Cavallo Smith, Alison Smith, and Ashley Smith. Beloved brother of Jim Smith of Jamestown, TN, Helen Goss of Sparta, TN and Seminole, FL, Charlotte Childers of Ocala, FL and the late Glenn Smith. Devoted brother-in-law of Elaine B. and Brooker Thro of Marina del rey, CA, Nancy B. and Don McManus of Orlando, FL and Bonnie B. and Dan Singleton of Hingham. Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. John is also survived by 2 special friends at Dana Farber, Dr. Charles Fuchs and Dr. Elizabeth Trice. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Mass on Saturday, October 20, 2007 that will be celebrated in Saint Paul’s Church, 147 North St. Hingham at 10:30 AM. Visiting hours Friday 4 – 8 PM at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. Hingham. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John D. Smith may be made to Dr. Charles Fuchs, c/o Dana Farber, P.O. Box 55584, Boston, MA 02205-5584.
