John A. “Jack” Martin

John A. “Jack” Martin of Weymouth, passed away February 18, 2023. He was 80 years old.

Born on May 28, 1942 in Boston, he was the son of the late John A. Martin and Catherine (Lynch). Jack graduated from Hingham High School.   As a student at Northeastern University, he joined ROTC and was called to the Vietnam War. Soon after his tour of duty was over he resumed studies in business administration at Northeastern,  and continued employment as Bookstore Manager, he eventually became Vice President of Business at NU. He was proudly inducted to the Northeastern Athletic Hall of Fame.

While in Vietnam as Signal Battalion leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, Jack was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery during a firefight.  As for most of the soldiers in combat, he was affected by Agent Orange, leaving a disabling condition.  Lasting friendships were made during that war, Jack keeping in touch with many of his Brothers up until his death.

Jack has left a legacy in his service of three decades at Northeastern.  His career at N.U. reigned from book store Manager in 1967 to Vice President of Business until retiring in 2002.  During his career, he established himself as an ambassador of the University on several committees, including three terms as President of the Massachusetts Association of Non-Profit Schools and Colleges. He has been a consistent force in the community as well, serving on the Board of Directors for the Boston YMCA and the Emerald Necklace Society, including the Fenway Alliance among many other projects.

Jack enjoyed spending time with friends on his boat Scortha, and as a member of the Braintree Yacht Club, the Elks, studying family genealogy,  literature, mechanics, nature, films, and music. He was a man of strong faith, and found spiritual support through his affiliation with the Union Congregational Church.

He was a beloved husband of Diane Lind Martin of Weymouth, cherished father of Tara Lee Martin Coulson of Weymouth and the late Christine Martin Quinlan, dear brother of Kathleen Van Deusen and her husband Howard of Arizona, the late Rose Motta (her husband Ralph) and Mary Lou Baker (her late husband Bob), loving Grandpa to Zachary, Grace , MJ and Jacob and to his great grandchildren Valerie and Veronica.

He is survived by many cousins and friends who loved him dearly, and his Brothers who served by his side.
