On March 5, 2023, Joan (Leary) Mahoney, originally from Quincy, got her wings and went to walk with the angels. She was eighty-eight years old.
Joan was the beloved wife of the late William F. Mahoney and loving mother of Maureen (Peter) Collins of Granger, IN, Jean (Jerry) Lawlor of Quincy, Billy Mahoney (deceased), Kathleen (Bill) Ferguson of Windham, NH, Carol (Michael) O’Mahony (both deceased), Beth Murphy of Quincy and Therese (Tommy) Carter of Windham, NH. Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Joan was born in Boston, MA on December 26, 1934 to the late Frank Leary, and the late Katherine (Melia) Leary. She was the youngest of five daughters, Pat, Connie, Joyce, and Nancy. She was a strong, independent woman who went on to become a member of the first graduating class at Catherine Labouré School of Nursing, Boston, MA, the first independent, regional, three-year diploma nursing program in New England.
Joan used her love of nursing to care and nurture others She had a huge heart and always made time to care for anyone who was sick or hurt. She loved her family, friends, and especially her 13 grand children. Holidays were always her favorite times. Joan and Bill’s home on Putnam Street in Quincy was always open to the many friends and family who would stop by to enjoy an afternoon or evening around their dining room table. No one left their home a stranger. Joan was a huge Boston/New England sports fan, a gene her late son Billy inherited. She never missed a game and loved hosting game-watch parties. She lived her life to the fullest amongst her many friends and family, especially the Wicky Wackies, the beloved group of wonderful women who were blessed to have found each other.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family during Visiting Hours on Friday, March 10 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.at Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Quincy MA. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held in the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, followed by the Funeral Mass in Saint Ann’s Church, 757 Hancock St., Quincy MA. at 10am.
The family would like to give special thanks to the friends and staff at Mary Immaculate Health/Care Services, Inc., 172 Lawrence Street, Lawrence, MA. where Joan was loved and cared for over the past two years. The love, support and comfort she received was wonderful.
