Joan Carty, age 83, passed away peacefully at her home on July 7th in Quincy, MA.
She is survived by her five children: Michael Carty of West Bridgewater, Debbie O’Donnell and her husband Larry of Onset, Doug Carty and his wife Linda of West Bridgewater, Bill Carty of Marshfield, Tricia Carty of West Bridgewater, and her siblings: Robert Buckley of Lakeville, Raymond Buckley and his wife Nancy of New Bern, NC, Irene Collorone and her husband Chris of Brockton. She was also survived by eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Originally from the Ashmont section of Dorchester, Joan (Buckley) was a member of a large Irish catholic family. As a tom-boy, she grew up spending much of her time at the local ballpark. She married and started a family, keeping her roots in Dorchester in St. Kevin’s Parish. She joined a bowling league as a way to get out and socialize. She quickly became a very good bowler, amassing many high average trophies at Lucky Strike Lanes. She also started a business out of her home, Joanie’s Daycare. It quickly became a popular destination for the children of her many clients over the years. Most of those clients became friends and extended family. Always the socialite, her annual Christmas party was looked forward to by the entire family as well as her many friends. After getting divorced, she moved back to the Ashmont area. After health issues caused her to give up bowling, she concentrated her efforts on her business and her family. She always made sure everyone of them would get a phone call from her on their birthday. She had relocated for a brief time to North Quincy before setting up shop in West Quincy for many years. She retired her daycare business there before moving to Quincy Center where she lived out her days worrying about her siblings and her children, advising her grandchildren, and watching sunsets from her fifth floor balcony.
Services for Joan will be held on Friday, July 14th from 4 to 8 pm at Keohane’s Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 15th at 10 am at St. John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, MA.
