Joan L. Gleason

formerly of Jamaica Plain and Roslindale, a retired teacher, died Sunday at the Quincy Medical Center after a long illness. She was a graduate of Boston Teachers College and received a Masters Degree in Education at Boston State College. Miss Gleason wan an Elementary School Teacher in the Quincy Public Schools for 41 years. She taught Grade 1 at the Massachusetts Fields School in Wollaston and Grades 1 and 2 at the Francis W. Parker School in North Quincy. She retired in 1998. Miss Gleason lived to teach and touched the lives of many students. Many former pupils kept in contact. She was the recipient of the Golden Apple Award several times and was listed in the “Who’s Who of American Teachers”. Miss Gleason was the daughter of the late John L. Gleason, Boston City Councillor in the 1930’s and the late Mary Gleason-Stella. She was the devoted niece of the late Helena Lovell. She is survived by her two brothers, Arthur Stella of Wollaston, and Joseph Stella & his wife Rita of North Andover; two nephews, Joseph Stella & his wife Allison of Brookline, NH and James Stella of North Andover; a niece Janet & her husband Larry Crateau of West Pawlet, VT; two great nephews: John & Matthew and five great nieces: Abigail, Hanna, Jacquyline, Christine & Katherine. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., WOLLASTON, Thursday at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in Saint Ann’s Church, Wollaston at 10 AM. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 PM. Burial in Mount Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury. Donations in memory of Miss Gleason may be made to the Quincy Education Scholarship Fund, QEA Office, 509 Hancock St., Wollaston, MA 02170.
