Jeremiah Francis Lucey Jr. of Hanover passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 5, 2024. He was five days shy of his 93rd birthday.
Born in Cambridge he was the son of the late Jeremiah F. Lucey and Anna C. Lucey (Lillis).
Jeremiah, known as Jerry by his friends, Dad by his children, and Pops by his grand and great grandchildren, was loved, and respected by all. It was always a proud moment to be with him when he encountered someone he knew because they were so happy to see him. So many of the encounters that we all have with strangers in our daily lives, were filled with friendly banter, quiet kindness, a smile, and also laughter… if the conversation went that way. It was not unusual to be driving through the City of Cambridge with him and to have him slow down by a person walking tiredly with a cane, or struggling with groceries, and have him ask if they wanted a lift somewhere. We, his children, would be told to hop in the back seat so that the person needing a ride was in the place of honor. It would be a quiet friendly ride, with our dad only conversing if the honored passenger wanted to talk. You felt better just being with him, whether as a stranger, family, or a friend.
Jeremiah did not finish high school, but joined the Navy. He was proud of his country. He worked all of his life for the City of Cambridge in the Sewer Department. He began as a brick mason, and throughout his life when asked on any documentation what his occupation was, listed himself as a laborer. He slowly rose through the ranks and ended as the Superintendent of the Sewer Department, running the department, negotiating contracts, and representing the city in court cases. He was tough to shake on the stand! You could not confuse or cause him to waver.
His greatest joys were going for long car rides, singing songs, and being with his family. You never felt alone with a burden or a problem because he was always there with unconditional love….not that he wouldn’t face facts with you!
He was a good man.
Jeremiah was the beloved father of Linda Lucey and her husband John Reills of Amherst NH, Mary Sundelin of Roxbury, and Jeremiah Lucey III of Hanover. Cherished grandfather of Erica Cimeno, Geoffrey Reills, Leif Sundelin, Jared Reills, Tara Sundelin, Amanda Lucey, and great grandfather of Annalyse, Finn, Dean, Lilyana and Juliana.
