Jean Marie Fleck “Gaga”, a lifelong resident of Hull, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024, with her family at her side. She was 76.
Jean was born in Boston to Mildred (Shea) and John Glawson. She grew up in Hull and graduated from Hull High School. She worked for the Town of Hull in the School Department and later in the Town Accountant’s office. She spent the last thirty plus years of her career as a clerk with the Hingham District Court until she retired. Jean took pride in being a longtime member of the Hull Democratic Town Committee and served as a delegate at the Massachusetts State Democratic Convention.
Always wanting to present herself well Jean could often be found on her lunch break scouring the racks at the Talbots Outlet store in Hingham knowing exactly when the next markdown would be taken to make the item a steal. She wanted to make sure others were properly attired as well and each Fall she would knit matching hats and mittens for her grandson, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jean Marie enjoyed celebrating special occasions but especially her Birthday Week, accompanied by family and friends for dinner or lunch at a nice restaurant that had a good pour. Jean would travel to Boston and Broadway to see a show and loved taking her grandson Owen to the South Shore Music Circus or the Wang Theatre to see a kids show followed by a special lunch. She very much enjoyed her social life, whether it was with family, friends or dog sitting her Golden Retriever grand pups Buffett and Bella.
Growing up in Hull Jeannie had a true affinity for the water and had her own small boat when she was younger. She learned to sail and would race in SNAFU with her friends in regattas from Hull Bay to Cohasset and Marblehead. Later in life she enjoyed leisurely sails around Hull with friends on fine Summer’s days. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time at the beach relaxing with friends. She was an avid reader and spent many an afternoon at Hull Gut reading a book, getting some sun and watching the boats go by.
Jean loved to travel. Whether it was spending time visiting family and friends in Naples, FL or jaunting off with them to visit Paris, London, Ireland, Scotland, St Thomas, San Francisco, Hawaii or a River Cruise in Germany she always enjoyed herself. She spent many a Summer’s Day in Nantucket and often returned in December for the Christmas Stroll.
Jean was a sports fan but especially loved football and was a season ticket holder for Boston College football for over twenty years. She and friends combined football and a passion for travel and took multiple trips to Miami, Notre Dame, Annapolis and West Point to see the sites and cheer on the team.
Jean had a big heart but also a tough no nonsense attitude. Over the years many a friend sought her guidance and assistance during a time of trouble. She was compassionate and willing to help and was not shy to offer her own advice.
Jeannie was fiercely independent and did whatever was needed to make her way. She knew there were experiences to be had and memories to be made outside of her home in Hull. Even though she missed them she was proud and happy that her son Jay moved to Hawaii to attend college and was even more proud when her grandson chose to move away at a young age and attend Deerfield Academy.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Devoted mother to Jay Fleck and his wife Michelle of Hull. Proud grandmother to Owen Patrick Fleck of Hull. Also survived by many cousins and dear friends that were like siblings to her.
Predeceased by her parents, Mildred and John Glawson and her former husband, John Leonard Fleck Jr.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Monday, February 19th, from 4-7 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Tuesday, February 20th, prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Anthony’s Church, Cohasset at 11 AM. Burial in Hull Village Cemetery, Hull. For those that are unable to attend the Funeral Mass in person, please tune in virtually via the live stream.
Jean enjoyed a party, having fun and seeing people smile. Some of her favorite times were taking her grandson Owen to the Paragon Carousel for a ride and an ice cream or pictures with Santa and the Easter Bunny. So that others may experience the same joy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Jean’s name may be made to The Paragon Carousel.
