Jean Marie Booth

Jean Marie (Sweeney) Booth of Hingham died peacefully on July 19, 2024, surrounded by her family, she was 97.

Daughter of the late Daniel J. Sweeney and Helen W. (Clausen) Sweeney. Devoted mother of Carol J. Booth of Hingham and Janet M. Finn and her husband Dennis of Bedford, NH. Cherished Nani to Kevin P. Finn of Lowell and Ryan D. Finn and his wife Grace E. Finn of Bedford, NH. Jean also leaves behind her devoted care taker and friend Mary Belsan of Marshfield.

Jean grew up in West Roxbury then moved to Jamaica Plain, she attended Notre Dame Academy of Boston and graduated in 1945. She then went on to graduate from Emmanuel College with a degree in chemistry in 1949 - something few women accomplished in that era. She worked for New England Telephone and Telegraph for more than 25 years in the accounting department and also worked as a substitute teacher in both Hingham and in Hull Schools. Raising her two daughters alone further underscores her resilience and dedication. Her academic achievements, despite the challenges of her time, reflect her strong work ethic which she instilled in both her daughters. A woman of deep faith, she was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, baking, walking and the theater. She also participated in continued lifelong learning taking Irish history and art classes. She was a long time participant in Tai Chi at the Hingham Senior Center. She had a spirit of adventure and curiosity, she loved to travel with her beloved friend and companion June Martel. They traveled to Ireland, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, the Orient and all through the United States. They also enjoyed cruises to warmer climates. After her retirement, Jean continued to enrich her life through volunteering at the Aisling Gallery and Framing in Hingham, where she met her dear friends Maureen and John Connolly. It was there she joined the readers club and was able to continue her love for reading and cultivating meaningful relationships. Jean was a very educated woman far beyond her time. Her story is a testament to her intelligence, independence and lasting impact on those around her. The cornerstone of Jean’s life was her family, they were the foundation of everything that was truly important to her, especially her grandsons. Although they are heartbroken at her loss they feel fortunate for all the blessings she brought into their lives.
