James Martin Rattigan

James “Jimmy/Seamus” Martin Rattigan of Hingham, formerly of Yonkers, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 18, 2024. He was 79.

He was born in Ireland to William & Delia Rattigan and raised in Knockadoon, Irishtown, County Mayo, Ireland. When he was a young man, he moved to the U.S. and settled in the New York metropolitan area. He married Kathleen “Kathy” and became a wonderful dad to her two young daughters, Debbie and Denise. The family moved to Yonkers, where Jimmy would call home and where he worked as a Superintendent for Union 32 BJ for more than 30 years. He retired in 2011 and moved to Orange County, NY to be near Debbie and her family, and in 2020 he moved to Hingham to be with Denise and her family.

Jimmy was always working with his hands and enjoyed fixing things and helping others. It was his gift to the world. He was a simple guy that was rooted in his Irish heritage and Catholic faith. Jimmy was quick to make friends and was a mentor to many. He always had a joke ready, or a hand extended to help others. You’d never hear him complain, no matter the adversity he had come across. He truly brought so much joy and laughter to so many people’s lives.

In his spare time, Jimmy stayed active and loved going for walks, especially with his dog, Daisy. Jimmy and Daisy had an unspeakable bond in this life and passed several days apart. When he was home, he listened to Irish and Country music and enjoyed watching classic movies and TV shows especially Columbo and John Wayne movies.

Beloved husband of over 40 years to the late Kathleen Rattigan (Roche). Devoted father to Debbie McCabe-Thau of Monroe, NY and Denise McCabe of Hingham, MA, Debbie’s husband Steve, and Denise’s husband John MacDougall. Adored grandfather to Jack, Owen, Keira, and Caitlyn. Also survived by his sister, Peg, of England and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews who adored him.

Predeceased by his parents, William & Delia Rattigan, and his siblings, Bridie, Mary, Mick, Tom and Paddy.

A Celebration of Life will be held in NY at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Debbie and Denise ask that donations in memory of Jimmy may be made to Harbor House Activities Department for Residents. Please make donation checks payable to “Harbor House” and include “Activities Department for Residents” on the memo line. Please send to Harbor House, ATTENTION: Activities Department/Liz, 11 Condito Rd, Hingham, MA 02043. Please add a note that the donation is in loving memory of James Rattigan.
