James P. Costello

Costello, James P. of Hingham, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 5, 2023. He was 81. Born in Boston in 1941, he was the only child of the late John and Kathleen (Helly) Costello.

Loving husband to Arlene (Murphy) Costello of Hingham. Cherished father to Kristine Costello and her wife Debra Malcolm of Seattle, WA, Susan Costello of Quincy, James Costello of Hingham, and Patricia Cotter and her husband Donny Cotter of Foxboro. Caring grandfather (“Bubba”) to Catherine Cotter and Ryan Cotter.

James (“Jim”) grew up in Savin Hill where he began his strong connection to community and met the love of his life Arlene (“Larnie”) Costello. Jim and Larnie were together for over 60 years. Jim enjoyed the respect and admiration of his friends and colleagues and connected with everyone he met in a unique and meaningful way.

Jim started his working life as a laborer, joined the Carpenters Union, served as a union leader, and spent the bulk of his career as a labor member of the Massachusetts Joint Labor Management Committee for Municipal Police and Fire. Jim served as the Chairman of the Massachusetts Port Authority Retirement Board for many years.

After retirement, Jim enjoyed time with family and friends. He traveled, played golf, volunteered his time, cheered on his grandchildren, and stayed active in the community. He was one of a kind.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Thursday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home EAST WEYMOUTH at 3 Charles Street (corner of Charles & Middle Street). A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Friday before the Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 10 AM. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Boston.
