James B. McGrath (OFD) of Weymouth, formerly of Dorchester and upstate New York, passed away on October 25, 2024 surrounded by his family. The beloved husband of 36 years to Barbara (Thackeray) McGrath. Son of the late John and Adelene (MacGowan) McGrath. Cherished brother of John McGrath and his wife Maureen of Abington, Thomas McGrath of Abington, Barbara Dever and her husband Paul of North Easton, Daniel McGrath of Abington, Patricia Stone and her husband James of Whitman, and the late Robert McGrath and his wife Pamela of Maine. Jim is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
Jim was a loving husband, son, brother, and uncle who loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed large family gatherings including pool parties, cookouts, birthdays, and especially at Christmas. He brought great joy to many of the family children over the years as the perfect Santa. As a child, he loved going to Cape Cod with his family every summer. Jim loved to travel. A few trips were to Ireland, Las Vegas, Florida, Canada, Alaska and Bermuda. He was a proud veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He worked in the U.S Post Office and retired in 2009. In his younger days, he belonged to bowling leagues and continued bowling into his later years in upstate New York. Jim was a happy guy always smiling and joking, with a positive attitude which was contagious. Jim’s spirit and memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Wednesday Oct. 30th from 4-7 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Thursday, Oct. 31th prior to the Funeral Mass in St. John’s Church, Quincy at 10 AM. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. A Proud United States Army Veteran. Donations in memory of Jim may be made to the Alzheimers Assn., MA Chapter, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452.
