Cox, James M., Retired Lieutenant, Boston Police Department, of Hingham March 28, 2006. The beloved husband of Kathleen (Callahan) Cox. Loving father of Michael J. Cox of Hingham, Maria McPherson and Kathlyn Breen, both of Danvers, Nancy Cox of Marshfield, Colleen Cox Forrand of Weymouth, Thomas J. Cox of Norwell and Brian J. Cox of Scituate. Also survived by 10 grandchildren. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM, Friday at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in Saint Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10 AM. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8 PM. Burial in Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham. Mr. James M. Cox served with the U.S. Air Force Security Service Communications Intelligence from 1955 to 1959. He was stationed in Libya and Japan. He had worked for over thirty years with the Boston Police Department from 1964 to 1994 and retired as a Lieutenant Detective. Lieutenant Cox co-sponsored the Quinn Police Career Incentive Pay Plan for all police officers. He instituted Anti-Street Crime Tactics for the Boston Police and established a Hostage Negotiator Training Program. He graduated from B.C. High in 1954 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University and a Masters Degree in Education from Boston University. He taught Law Enforcement at Northeastern and North Shore Community College. He taught Hostage Negotiation to numerous Police Departments throughout New England for the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council. Throughout his career, he negotiated the release of about a dozen hostages during several incidents in Boston. The incident that stood out the most was in July of 1979 when Boston Police Superintendent Edward Connolly was shot trying to make an arrest. It took about seven hours of intense negotiation by Lieutenant Cox to have the shooter release his family without any more harm at the scene. Lieutenant Cox also worked in a middle Management Exchange Program with the New York City Police Department in Lower Manhattan and the Bronx. He retired as the Commanding Officer of the General Investigation Unit pursuing Asian Organized Crime in Boston. During his retirement, he worked at the South Shore Country Club Golf Course in Hingham. He and his wife are originally from the Savin Hill Section of Dorchester.
