James F. Waples Jr., of Franklin, Massachusetts, formerly of Hingham, Massachusetts, passed peacefully at his home on Friday, January 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 93.
Jim was born on August 12, 1930, in Queens, New York to Margaret L. (Faulhaber) and James F. Waples Sr.
Jim graduated from Mepham High School in Brooklyn, New York where he was a proud member of the wrestling team. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War as an electronics technician on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany, after which he attended Hofstra University through the G.I. Bill. Jim married Mercedes Buckley in 1961 and after a series of moves settled in Hingham, Massachusetts, where they lived for many years. After college, Jim worked as a computer programmer during which he wrote an entire accounting system in Assembly Language. He then moved into Management Consulting at Coopers & Lybrand (now PwC) from which he retired in 1993. Jim moved to Franklin, Massachusetts to live with son Andrew and family in 2015.
He loved the outdoors, especially canoe trips with his children and solo trips on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and St. John River in Maine. Jim was a friend to every dog he met, and for several years was a volunteer at the Scituate Animal Shelter. Jim was also an avid birder, and knew every type of bird that came to feed on the backyard feeders he diligently stocked each day.
Jim was the beloved husband of the late Mercedes A. (Buckley) Waples, who died in 2000. He was the devoted father of Peter J. Waples and his wife Robin Shanor of Las Vegas, Nevada, Matthew J. Waples of Hingham, Massachusetts, Andrew J. Waples and his wife Lynn of Franklin, Massachusetts, and Katharine Mercedes “Aunty” Waples of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Jim was the loving grandfather of Katharine Janet Waples of Washington D.C., Caroline Waples of Franklin, Massachusetts, and Brendan Waples of Essex Junction, Vermont. Jim was preceded in death by his brothers John M. and William F. Waples, his dog Jimmy and several others that he cared for through the years. He is also survived by many loving extended family members.
