James M. Della Volpe, “Jim”, a cherished husband, father, friend and Papa, passed away on August 30, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born on October 16, 1946, in Long Branch New Jersey and raised in Union Beach, New Jersey. The son of the late Angelina and Nicholas Della Volpe. Always courageous, he decided he needed a new adventure and left New Jersey and moved to the Chicago area where he and his family spent a few years until he wanted to move back to the East Coast and that is where he raised his children and built an incredible life in Hingham, MA. He was the beloved husband of Sherry Lloyd, whom he married on November 2, 1968.
He was known to his friends as a wonderful mentor and was steadfast in his guidance and wisdom that he spread. Jim is one of those people who managed to impact many people’s lives and enjoyed spending time shooting clays at the gun club or fishing for blues, tending to his garden, or coaching a young entrepreneur. Jim was often referred to as the “unofficial mayor” of Oyster Pointe Resort in Sebastian, Florida, where he spent 22 glorious years at the family time share.
He was an Italian son who loved food and taught us all that family is everything.
One of his first jobs that he talked about was when he worked in Lofts Candy store where he developed a love of reading books to pass the time…as well as a few cavities. He was lucky enough to attend Red Back Catholic High School where he made lifelong friends and was encouraged to apply to college. He was accepted and attended Monmouth College in NJ earning a degree in Business. His education laid the foundation for a successful career that saw him rise to the position of National Sales Manager. Jim was not only a leader in sales but also a mentor, sharing his expertise through business coaching. He shared his wisdom often and taught us to “take one tide at a time’ reminded us to “make hay while the sun shines” and to “turn down offers, not opportunities”. He also taught us to ‘go ahead and just ask- the worst they can say is no” and to “keep pointing your feet to the sunny side of the street”. And his favorite magnet always on the Fridge in Sebastian had the Italian saying: “Dolce Far Niente”—the Sweetness of Doing Nothing.
Jim is survived his beloved wife, Sherry L. Della Volpe and their children Nicole Newport and Michael Della Volpe and his two grandsons Andrew and Matthew Newport and his granddaughter Goldie Della Volpe who were the pride of Jim’s life. Other survivors include his brother Nick Della Volpe (Donna) and his son-in-law Kyle Newport and daughter-in-law Mia Hewitt.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family for a Celebration of Life at the Weathervane Golf Club Tavern, 117 Clubhouse Drive in Weymouth at 1 pm on Friday, September 6th, 2024.
In lieu of flowers please donate in loving memory of Jim to The American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
