James Meuse Cunningham, of Weymouth, formerly of Braintree, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was 87.
James was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on December 18, 1936, and was the son of the late Robert Grey and Mae Emelie (Izamay Meuse) Cunningham. He was raised in Braintree and attended local schools. James earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in public administration.
James was a United States Air Force veteran. He enlisted on September 25, 1962, and was honorably discharged on June 26, 1966. James proudly served our country during the Vietnam War.
James worked for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in the real estate department. He was deeply involved in the Weymouth community with a broad range of roles and responsibilities. His work with the Whitman's Pond Association and the Open Space Planning Committee highlighted his dedication to environmental and community concerns. His involvement with the Naval Air Station Restoration Advisory Board reflected his commitment to local history and redevelopment.
James had a strong commitment to civic duty and social engagement as a member of the Elks and Lions Club. With his educational background in Education and Public Administration, James had both the knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to his various roles. His diverse activities reflect a person who was both active in and passionate about making Weymouth a wonderful community.
James was the beloved husband of the late Grace Marie (Palumbo) Cunningham, with whom he shared many loving years of marriage. He was the devoted uncle of Rose Di Cesare and her late husband Michael of Quincy, Vincent Miele of Braintree, Steven Miele and his wife Elizabeth of Ft. Myers, Florida, Teresa Ash of Quincy, Francis Miele and his wife Ann Marie of Belgrade, Montana and Domenic Palumbo and his wife Cindy of Salem, New Hampshire. James was the loving great uncle and great-great uncle to many nieces and nephews and is also survived by many loving extended family members and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Monday, August 19, 2024, 4-7 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 AM on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Albert the Great Church, Weymouth at 10 AM.
Services will conclude with interment and military honors in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Weymouth.
