Mr. Hugh J. Duffy, Ret. District Chief, BFD, of Hingham, formerly of Dorchester and Weymouth, died March 10, 2023.

Beloved husband of the late Jeanne (Doherty) Duffy.

Loving father of Lynne Cunningham (Paul), of Weymouth,  Louise Henderson of Marshfield, Hugh Duffy, Ret,  BFD, (Geri) of Duxbury, Jeanne Hammond (Brian) of Mashpee,  Kathleen Duffy of Hingham, Thomas Duffy (Amanda), of Colorado, Patricia Smith (Edward), of Norwell,  Maureen Sudbey (David) of Osterville, and Aileen Darois (Al) of Weymouth.  Also survived by 22 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Hugh was a WW II Navy Veteran serving in the South Pacific. When he returned home Hugh became a proud member of the Boston Fire Department where he had a much respected 35 year career and made many friends. He started as a Firefighter at Engine 17 and moved up the ranks to Lieutenant on Engine 43, Captain at Engine 21 and finished his career as District Chief in District 10.

Himself married the love of his life Jeanne who he met during thier high school years in Dorchester. They were married for 72 years before Jeanne’s passing in April 2022. Together they created an amazing family legacy with their 9 children, 22 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

He worked hard to purchase a second home for the family to spend their summers at Pinehurst Beach in Wareham where he and Jeanne enjoyed many patio sing a longs with their Pinehurst Friends.

Hugh enjoyed golf in his retirement. He also loved attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and could be seen sitting on the sidelines in his scally cap and could be heard coaching them from the sidelines.  He was very proud of his Irish Heritage and took his children and their spouses back to Ireland in 2000 to visit their roots, it was a trip of a lifetime. 

Hugh will always be remembered for his love and dedication to his family.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Monday, March 20th from 9 AM-10:30 AM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM, followed by Hugh’s Funeral Mass in Church of the Resurrection, Hingham at 11 AM. Burial will follow in MA National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:30 PM.

Due to the restrictions of flowers at the church during lent and at Mass National Cemetery the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452.
