Hugh E. Mackinnon

MacKinnon, Hugh E. “MAC” 93, of Braintree, formerly of North Weymouth, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2013.

Hugh was born March 11, 1920 in South Boston to the late John B. MacKinnon (of Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada) and the late Elizabeth J. (Snow) MacKinnon (of Toronto, Canada). Hugh also lived in Dorchester, and attended English High School.

He was married to the late Mildred (Mib) R. (Smith) MacKinnon of North Weymouth. Beloved father to Hugh B. MacKinnon of Washington, John R. MacKinnon of Virginia, Nancy E. (MacKinnon) Oteri of Bridgewater, the late Linda J. (MacKinnon) Robinson of Quincy and the late Donald MacKinnon of Weymouth. To all his grandchildren he was affectionately known as “Grumpy”. He leaves eleven grandchildren, 2 deceased, thirteen great-grandchildren, 1 deceased, and one great-great-grandchild. Hugh was the youngest of ten children and the last survivor. His beloved brothers were the late Brenton T., of Billerica, John S. of Norwell, Donald E., of Norwell, William C., of Hingham and sisters Doris E. Fish of Michigan, Ruth E. Devoy of Whitman, Margaret V. Hanson of Norwood, Anne Toland of Quincy and Florence R. Harrison of Scituate. Also a beloved sister-in-law Jean MacDonald of Waltham and Hyannis. Lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

“MAC” was a foreman for several cabinet making shops on the south shore for many years and retired at the age of 75. Hugh loved bowling, cruising and cards but his passion was dancing. He always had a warm smile and a witty and playful sense of humor. 

Hugh was a Communications Sergeant of CO. A. in the 17th Engineers Battalion of General Patton’s 2nd Amored Division. He participated in the invasions of French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and the occupation of Berlin. He was wounded at St. Lo, France and received the Purple Heart. He served 4 years. 

Hugh was a lifetime member of the George Bean Post 79, Weymouth and the 2nd Armored Division Association. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Tuesday 3-6 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital)  Funeral service will be celebrated following the visiting hours on Tuesday at 6 PM.  Burial will be private at a later date.
