Henry V. Maher, Jr.

Henry V. Maher, 93, of Quincy, formerly of S. Boston, died July 21, 2010. Loving son of the late Henry V. Maher and Lena (Bailey) Maher. Beloved uncle of Elaine (Alcarez) Keefe and her husband Dennis of Rockland, Janet (Alcarez) Parsons and her husband Peter of Boston, Laurence Alcarez and his wife Barbara of Hingham, and Thomas Alcarez of Quincy. Also survived by 6 great nieces and nephews and 2 great great nephews. Brother of the late Mildred Alcarez and her husband Louis. Henry had a very full and interesting life. As a young man, he worked as a radio operator for Pan American Airlines, flying the southern route and particularly enjoying his stays in Rio de Janeiro. In later years he worked for MIT and Draper Labs, as an electronics engineer, where he helped build the communications system for the space shuttle. He also later edited a technical airline magazine. He and another man together invented a jet part which is still in use today. An active participant in life, Henry traveled extensively during his Pan Am years. He enjoyed walking and was a member of the Castle Island Association. He was highly sociable, enjoying the friendship of many people. He entertained many interests and loved to learn, even both studying Spanish and buying his first computer at the age of 93. Of a decidedly scientific mind, he was always trying to figure out how and why things worked. Fiercely independent, he maintained his own home until just a couple of months ago. He was a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephews, and kept us entertained with many interesting and funny stories of his life. He will be sadly missed. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, QUINCY, Saturday at 9:15 AM. Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, N. Quincy at 10 AM. Visiting hours Friday from 4-8 PM. Burial in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, W. Roxbury.
