Henry J. Barone

Henry (Hank) Barone passed away June 26, 2017, in Weymouth, Mass.   Beloved husband of the late Katherine “Kay” (Condit) Barone.   Loving Father to the late Kenneth Barone of Hull, Faith Peterson of Swampscott, and Gil Barone of Pocasset; loving Father-in law to Candace Barone and Linda Barone.   Grandfather to Tamra Masterson & her husband Jamie, Brian Knibbs & his wife Connie, Hannah Peterson, and Daniel Peterson; Great Grandfather “GG” to Aeryn Masterson, Alex Taddei, and Madison Knibbs.  Uncle to the late J. Gilbert and Linda Condit and their three children, Mark, Jessica, and Hope; and Jane and David Rice.

Hank was born in 1919 in East Orange, New Jersey.  He graduated from Jersey State Teacher’s College in 1940, where he starred at basketball and met his wife, Kay.  They were married in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1943, where Hank was stationed as an Air Force instructor at Kirtland Field, training bombardiers on the Norden bombsight.  Hank exited the Army Air Corps with the rank of Captain, and moved to New England, where he and Kay raised their children, residing most of the years in Natick, Mass.  Hank earned a Master’s Degree in Administration from Boston University, and was the Principal of Bates Elementary School in Wellesley from its opening in 1953 until he retired in 1980.  Every year he took his sixth grade classes on field trips to Boston Red Sox games or to Benson’s Wild Animal Farm.  He also kept the Bates gymnasium open on Saturdays for the students to play basketball.  One of his favorite events was the annual chicken cookout he held for the Bates staff at the Barone yard in Natick.

Hank enjoyed cooking Italian food in retirement, and tending to his gardens.  He was a lifelong Celtics fan, never missing one of their games on TV.  He loved to golf, enjoying rounds over the years at Stow Acres, Wayland Country Club, and Sassamon Trace among other courses.   He and Kay travelled the world, including trips to China, a mail boat excursion up the Norwegian Coast, and a two week stay in Venice.  Hank & Kay moved from Natick to Linden Ponds in Hingham, Mass in 2009, where he was active in the Veterans Group, served on the Dining and Election Committees, participated in the chorus, and gardened tomatoes to be sold for the high school Scholarship fund.  He especially enjoyed his regular dinners with dear friends, and shooting pool with his three best friends after dinner.

A Celebration of Hank’s life will be held in the Derby Clubhouse Catering Room at Linden Ponds, 203 Linden Ponds Way, Hingham, MA  02043, on Saturday, July 22, 2017, from 1:00-4:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hank’s memory to the Linden Ponds Scholarship Fund, 203 Linden Ponds Way; or to the Ken Barone Fund at Mount Ida College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 777 Dedham Street, Newton Centre, MA  02459.
