Gloria A. Hughes

Hughes, Gloria A. (Petze), lifelong resident of Weymouth, passed away at home on July 22, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of the late Alphonso and Laura (LaRocco) Petze. Proud to be called a “townie,” she was born in Weymouth on February 19, 1930. 

A graduate of Weymouth High School class of 1947, she was a member of that reunion committee since graduation. In the past, Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Evening Division of the Monday Club. She was an elected Town Meeting member for more than 10 years. She was also a parishioner of St. Albert the Great Parish, and participated in the vigil to reopen the parish. She retired as a town employee after 25 years, beginning her career in the Building Department and concluding in the Veterans’ Services Office. A lifelong Red Sox fan, Gloria was known to watch every game she could.

Mrs. Hughes was the beloved wife of the late Paul V. Hughes, and she was predeceased by three infant daughters; Mary, Laurie, and Therese. She is survived by her son Paul J. Hughes and his wife Donna of Schenectady, NY; her daughter Pamela and her husband Keith Pantermoller of Weymouth; her one and only granddaughter Katie and her husband Thomas Mahoney; her great-grandchildren William and Julianna Mahoney of Weymouth; her sister Rita Scace of Cape Cod; her brother Leonard and his wife Cecile Petze of Rhode Island; and many nieces and nephews that she loved. Gloria’s family also wishes to thank the staff of the NVNA and Hospice for their compassionate care. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday, August 1, 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home EAST WEYMOUTH at 3 Charles Street (corner of Charles & Middle Street). A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 AM on Wednesday, August 2, prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Albert the Great Church, Weymouth at 10 AM. Burial in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Weymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Weymouth Food Pantry, PO Box 890009, Weymouth, MA 02189 or NVNA and Hospice Charitable Fund, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061.
