Smart, Gertrude M. (Anderson) of Quincy, passed away on April 30, 2011 at the age of 94. Beloved wife of the late Atty. Dalton E. Smart, Sr. Devoted mother of Robert D. Smart and his wife Elizabeth of NH, Dalton E. Smart, Jr. and his wife Mary Jane of FL, Sandra A. and her husband John Bailey of Hingham, Michael W. Smart and his wife Yorie of MN, and the late Ronald E. Smart. Cherished grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Loving sister of the late Edith Grahn, Elsie Turgeon, Oscar Anderson and Robert Anderson. Special friend of George Townsend of Quincy. Also lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews. Gertrude Smart born on September 30, 1916 in Watertown, MA. She grew up in Dorchester; then, until most recently, lived on Harriet Ave. in North Quincy. The third of five children, born to Hilda and Oscar Anderson; both were indentured Swedish immigrants who modeled the values of hard work later acquired by their children. Of humble means, it was a treat for Gertrude to get used fashion magazines that she could cut into paper dolls. The first of her family to graduate from high school; she then married Dalton Smart and was a motivating force behind his completing law school and becoming a practicing attorney in Quincy. “Gertie’s” secret to a long life was a strong work ethic, an ever present sense of humor, and a deep appreciation for the people in her life. She was a devoted homemaker who loved to cook, sew, knit, play games and do puzzles. She was a member of the Beechwood Senior Center and Senior Olympics, where she won over 50 medals. Gertrude’s family would like to thank all of the caring nurses and staff at The Atrium at Faxon Woods and the River Bay Club for the special care they gave to Gertrude. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Tuesday 4-8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Wednesday prior to the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Quincy at 10 AM. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gertrude may be made to Alzheimers Assn., MA Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
