McCourt, Gerald J. of Marstons Mills, formerly of Hingham, passed away surrounded by the love of his family, on November 8, 2014.
Beloved husband of the late Theresa E. (McAleavey) McCourt, he was also the loving father of Patricia M. Batchelder and her husband Dr. Carl Batchelder of Kingston, Terese M. Michaud of Cataumet, Gerald J. McCourt and his wife Roberta of Pembroke, Ruth M. Stevens and her husband Paul of Groton, and Brian J. McCourt of New Jersey.
He was the cherished Grampy to Ryan, Meghan, Kathryn, Michael, Jim, Lizzie, PJ, Danny, Connor, Patrick, Cameron, Stephanie and Chris. Dear G.G. to Maggie, William, Colin, Elizabeth, and Aedan. He was the youngest brother of the late Charles McCourt, Mary (Molly) McCourt Thompson, and James McCourt. He also had many loving nieces and nephews.
Gerry was a strong, competent self-made man. Born of Irish immigrants in Harrison New Jersey, he was raised between there and Ireland. He proudly served his country in two branches of the military, first serving with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, where he was witness to history, having been present at the Japanese surrender. He later served in the U.S. Army during peacetime. He was most enamored of his service years and regaled his family with countless stories of his adventures and travels to many parts of the world.
After the war, he graduated from Newark College of Engineering in NJ. He married the love of his life, Terry and they were married for 61 years. He worked in the early days of computer engineering. His resourcefulness, drive and outgoing personality, enabled him to attain the highest positions in his field at McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. He possessed a wry sense of humor and a love of his Irish heritage. He was fierce bearer of responsibility for his family and was regarded as a person who met challenges head on. Known as Dad, Grampy, Unc and G.G., he was the patriarch of his family, looked up to as mentor and reliable friend and admired as a “one-of-a kind”. His mark was indelible and he is already missed.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Friday prior to the Funeral Mass in Church of the Resurrection, Hingham at 10 AM. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.
Donations in memory of Gerald may be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Plymouth, MA 02360.
