George A. “Tony” Hewett, of Hingham, died peacefully at home after a valiant battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, June 7, 2021. “He has ceased to be with us anywhere so that he can be with us everywhere”. -Unknown
Born in Morristown, NJ on July 28, 1954, he was a precious, spirited son of Flora (Marotta) Hewett and late (Lt. Colonel) George Hale Hewett. Tony, loving husband of Laura S. Hewett for 30 years, devoted ceaseless energy to his three vivacious children, Marilyn, Andrea and Geoffrey. Tony will now rest in serenity beside his pre-deceased infant son, Gregory S. Hewett. He was the dear brother of Michaela H. Hewett, his twin Gregory C. Hewett and the late Maria Cristina (Hewett) Lever. A fully involved, fun-loving uncle, Tony will be forever missed by many nieces and nephews.
Tony graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 1972 and remained involved in aspects of scholarship funding and aiding students of Veterans. Tony went on to graduate from Bucknell University from where so many lifelong friendships still rallied around him. He completed his academic journey with a degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1979. Tony had a thriving practice at Davis, Malm, D’Agostine for 37 years where he represented banks in commercial lending and government finance transactions. Tony took great joy in his work and equal enthusiasm in sharing his knowledge with others. This, combined with his quintessential comfortable nature led to countless close ties with colleagues and clients alike.
Fatherhood was Tony’s recreation. He was a Hingham Youth Soccer coach spanning 12 years to cover the field years of all three children. A stack of bleachers, his “home away”, put him center stage for every basketball game, track meet, crew regatta, water polo, and tennis match. His favorite place was on the ocean teaching his kids to waterski, wakeboard, drive a boat and simply drift with carefree conversation. Tony lived in the spirit of the boat he named, “Leap of Faith”. He will forever be our fearless Captain.
Tony was always kind hearted, selfless, and encouraging. He graced neighbors, friends, colleagues and often those unknown to him with the most glorious smile. He is a beacon of goodwill so many of us strive to emulate. Tony’s amazing life lessons and example are part of his legacy which will forever refuel his family’s love and determination.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will take place on Friday, July 9th at the Hingham Congregational Church at 10:30 a.m. A casual gathering will follow at the Hingham Harbor.
The family respectfully asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Tony’s memory via a GoFundMe page whereby collections are allocated between The Sarcoma Foundation of America and holiday gifting to Dana-Farber pediatric patients.
