George J. Burke Jr.

George was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1932. He moved with his family to Baltimore, Maryland where George completed high school and attended the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He obtained a degree in pharmacy in 1954 and in medicine in 1958. Following medical school, George completed an internship in radiology at the Mercy Medical Center and a residency in radiology at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1962. Following his medical residency, George served in the US armed forces and received a two-year grant for medical research in Montgomery County, MD; the results were successfully published. George obtained board certifications in radiology and in nuclear medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He married his wife, Mona, on October 9, 1976. In 1979 he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Radiology.

George practiced radiology and nuclear medicine at the South Baltimore General Hospital/Harbor Hospital until 1989. During this period, he was President of the American Cancer Society of Baltimore. In 1989, George moved with his family to Aiken, SC where he became Director of Nuclear Medicine at The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA and self-learned teacher of magnetic resonance until retirement in 1999. Post retirement, George worked as an itinerant radiologist in Georgia, as well as in Hobart, Tasmania, and Cairns, Australia.

George was a loving and dedicated husband, parent and friend. He loved to travel with his family. Known for his kindness and perception, George had a profound understanding of people and a great sense of humor. During his spare time, George enjoyed reading, book club, equine events, equine care, court tennis, and home projects. He started a branch of the International Wine and Food Society in Aiken, SC, and became a member of the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution. George lived in Savannah, GA until 2017 when he moved to Hingham, MA with his wife Mona, to be closer to his daughters and grandchild.

George was the beloved husband of 47 years to Mona Burke and devoted father to Carolyn Burke, Kimberly Burke, and the cherished grandfather of Giuliana Segadelli of Hingham. George is predeceased by his sister Gwen Bowers.

Services for George will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s name to the Russell H.
