George Gong

George Gong of Scituate, MA, passed suddenly on August 1, 2023, at the age of 84.  George was born on November 8, 1938, in New York, NY, to the late Henry Gong and Jan Lew Gong.  George is predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 53 years, Barbara L. Gong.  George was the proud father of Christopher S. Gong of Hingham, MA and loving stepfather to the late Gary R. Hendershot (formerly of Hanover, MA).  George was brother to Sally Wong of New York, NY; the late Harry Gong and the late Harold Gong.  Proud grandfather to Christopher S. Gong, Jr. and his wife Caitlin of Franklin, TN; Victoria E. Gong of Saint Petersburg, FL; Alexandria G. (Gong) Blackall and her husband, Evan of Hull, MA; Julianna C. Gong of Hingham, MA; George A. Gong of Hingham, MA; Keith R. Hendershot and his wife, Heather of Rochester, VT; the late Scott D. Hendershot (formerly of Woburn, MA) and Ariel H. (Hendershot) Martin and her husband, Christopher of Cohasset, MA.  George is also survived by his 8 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, their spouses and children.

George was raised in the borough of the Bronx on Jerome Avenue and spent his pre-teen and teen years working in the family business.  George attended the Bronx High School of Science and then went on to earn his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University.  After a couple of years working for various chemical companies in the Buffalo, NY area, George found himself in Boston working for what was then known as The Badger Company in Cambridge as a process engineer. It was at this time he met Barbara. George would spend the next 50 years designing chemical plants and oil refineries around the world.  George’s extensive work would take him on frequent business trips around the world, including 5 years in Den Haag, Netherlands, 7 months in Tokyo, Japan and 9 months in Durban, South Africa.  Always a curious and thoughtful man, George embraced this opportunity to learn about many different cultures.  George and Barbara, amidst all of this travel, made their permanent base in Scituate for over 50 years and enjoyed their quiet and peaceful life together.  George’s talents also extended to the kitchen where he would create gourmet French, Italian and Chinese meals that would shame most fine eateries.  Additionally, George spent many years helping Barbara with her passion as an antique dealer and collector.  George also spent his time watching son, Christopher, and then his grandchildren play sports, especially hockey.  George in the last few years avidly followed his granddaughter Julianna’s prep school then college hockey career, spending hours watching her play online and then pouring over the stats of the teams.  Donations in his memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or the ALS Association at als.org.  There will be a private burial service on Thursday, August 10th.
