George E. Long

Mr. George E. Long in his ninety-second year,  passed away peacefully on July 12th in the company of his family.

Originally from Dorchester; he spent the last forty-six years residing in Hingham. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy as a machinist’s mate aboard the USS Ormsby; participating in numerous invasions including Tarawa, the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, Guam, Peleliu and Leyte Gulf. From December 1950 until his retirement in March 1981, he was a proud member of the Boston Police Department in District – C11 and in the Crime Prevention Unit.

He leaves behind his beloved spouse of sixty-eight years, Virginia Kelly Long, his cherished daughters, Victoria Long Donovan and her spouse George of Quincy and Maureen Long Noonan and her spouse Michael of Abington, his adored grandchildren, Sarah and Brian Paccioretti of Weymouth, his nieces, Carolyn Angeles of Winchester, Kathryn Smith of Cambridge and Diane Sparks of Hingham. He also leaves behind his extended family; Dennis and Donna Donovan of Sharon, their daughters, Samantha and Molly and his former son-in-law, Edmund Paccioretti of Weymouth. He is survived by several nephews and a niece living on the West Coast. He was a sweet, dear and gentle man. His family will miss his face, his smile, his dignity and his grace. The Long Family would like to thank the staff at the Colonial Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility in Weymouth for their excellent care and compassion during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday from 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday at 8:30 AM in the Funeral Home followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 9:30 AM. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.
